Reporter says Buffalo Bills starter could be traded
Could one of the Buffalo Bills’ starting wide receivers be on his way out of town?
A New York Giants beat writer from the New York Daily News thinks a Buffalo Bills starter could be traded this offseason.
And he thinks the Giants could be a potential landing spot.
Pat Leonard made the observation on Thursday evening in a column about the Giants' offseason plans.
Leonard noted that the Giants have "poked around" the veteran wide receiver trade market. He also pointed out that Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis could be a trade candidate if Buffalo is unable to extend him.
Davis is in the final year of his contract and could seek an extension this offseason. Leonard noted that the Bills are already paying Stefon Diggs big money and they might not be willing to give another wide receiver a big contract.
With the way wide receivers have been paid lately, Davis could see the open market (or a trade and sign) as his best chance to cash in. If Davis is traded, the Giants would make the most sense because of the presence of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen (the Bills' assistant general manager from 2017 to 2021).
"It’s no secret that Schoen and Daboll have a high affinity for Davis," wrote Leonard. "Daboll was the play-caller for Davis’ eight-catch, 201-yard, four-touchdown AFC divisional playoff outburst in Jan. 2022."
Spotrac has Davis' current value at $12.4 million annually.
I can't see the Bills giving Davis a multi-year deal that pays him over $12 million annually.
But I also don't see Davis holding out and forcing a trade. The more likely scenario is that Davis plays out his contract in 2023 and then hits free agency next offseason (unless he has a big season and then maybe the Bills explore an extension).
While Davis' longterm future in Buffalo is uncertain, I wouldn't look for him to be traded this offseason.
