Lions huge winners from Panthers blockbuster trade for first-overall pick
Everything is going as well as any plan could.
The first massive domino has fallen for the 2023 NFL Draft. The Carolina Panthers have given up a massive haul to the Chicago Bears for the first-overall pick, and it looks like one of the biggest winners could be the Detroit Lions.
The Lions are in a bit of a weird spot with the sixth pick, but the current board could prove to move even more favorably in Detroit's direction with just one more move.
As it stands, a quarterback will come off the board with the first pick (Panthers), the second (Texans), and the fourth pick for sure (Colts). That leaves the Cardinals and the Seahawks as the two teams before the Lions that probably won't take quarterbacks, but that could change quickly.
Any other QB-needy team will be eyeing those picks with ferocity if they truly want to land one of the top four guys. The Raiders, Falcons, and Titans all seem like wild cards that could be trying to focus on their future at the most important position in the sport, and that will force them to get into business in the top-five.
While this probably won't directly impact the Lions with teams looking to trade to six, one more trade up would ensure that Detroit could land Will Anderson or Jalen Carter.
This opportunity was impossible a month ago. Now, this seems like a very real possibility.
Carter and Anderson are the two best defensive players in the class and would be a steal for the Lions at six.
Whether Detroit would want Anderson to pair with Aidan Hutchinson or Carter to immediately up the quality of the defensive line, there isn't a way to miss with those options.
There also isn't a way to miss in the other direction too.
Corner is still the biggest need for the Lions. They could choose to stay at six and have their pick of the class, but they could also trade back a little further with a less desperate team if they are okay simply landing one of the top three at the position while gaining more draft capital.
The possibilities are nearly endless for how the next month can play out, and most of these possibilities end with the first night of the 2023 NFL Draft going very well for the Detroit Lions.
