ESPN lists important hire as Chiefs' most under-the-radar move this offseason
Consistency is key
One of the major storylines for the Chiefs this offseason was the loss of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Bieniemy has been a critical part of the Chiefs' run with Mahomes and has been one of the best offensive coordinates in the league for years.
He could never land a head coaching job despite his success with the Chiefs. Many believe he could not land a job because he did not shine next to greats like Patrick Mahomes and Andy Ried.
This led Bieniemy to leave the Chiefs and accept the same role for the Washington Commanders.
The Chiefs decided to stay within the organization for his replacement, promoting Matt Nagy to the offensive coordinator role. Nagy was the Chiefs' offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017 before leaving for the Bears' head-coaching job. These are the Chiefs' last two years with Andy Ried at QB, as they switched to Patrick Mahomes the following season.
ESPN seemed to like the hire, calling it the Chiefs' “top under-the-radar move” of the offseason:
The obvious move was to promote Nagy, the Chiefs' quarterbacks coach last season, when longtime coordinator Eric Bieniemy left for a similar position with the Commanders. But it provides quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the other returning offensive players with continuity heading into next season. Nagy went 34-31 while coaching the Bears and won coach of the year in 2018. Nagy was later fired after a 6-11 season in 2021.
He returned to the Chiefs last season and operated as a senior assistant/QB coach. Chiefs fans hope that the offense won’t skip a beat with this coaching change and that Nagy can replicate his early success as an OC.
