This offseason the Denver Broncos changed some things up a bit, as they should have, and now, it's looking like the sky could be the limit in other areas, according to some players.
After getting a new head coach in Sean Payton in an attempt to turn the franchise around to the way things used to be, they spent some money in free agency getting the offensive line the way it should be. One of the news guys thinks the trenches will make a lot of noise in 2023 on the offensive side of the ball.
"I think our unit is something to be really excited about," right tackle Mike McGlinchey told the media. "I think we have a lot of talent and a lot of guys that, as you said, have played football and have certain experiences, but there are also certain things that our guys still need to grow… So it's all about buying in getting on the same page and playing as one unit and like I said, I think the skies can be the limit for our group. You know, we have two guards that are as big and, and, and quick and powerful as probably anybody in the NFL.
"I certainly believe in the two tackles that we have here that are, that we can be upper echelon and always playing to be the top in the league. And Lloyd is doing a great job so far too. So I think our groups, the sky is the limit and just being around them, everybody's a workhorse. We love working together, we love, you know, coming into work and lifting weights, running, running… I'm very excited about our group and the attitude that we have and certainly, the football will come."
Last season the Broncos led the league in a stat no one wants to – sacks allowed, with 61. Russell Wilson was sacked 55 times, which was tied for the most with Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. That has to change, especially if the offense is going to get to where it needs to be.
So, the Broncos saw that as it being one of the main roots of the problems. They got rid of any weeds, brought in some fresh new faces, paid a lot of money too, and expect to have a much improved offensive line. I think most people expect it will be better.
Garett Bolles will be returning from an injury where he will anchor down the left tackle spot, and we all know what he is capable of when he is healthy. Ben Powers, the former Baltimore Ravens right guard, allowed just 12 pressures in 597 pass-blocking snaps and didn't allow a single sack.
Cam Fleming played right tackle a bit last year and allowed 27 pressures to Mike McGlinchey's 24. However, you can see it in the tape that McGlinchey is definitely an upgrade, and the money paid says the same thing.
I think I may agree with McGlinchey when he says the sky is the limit, however, I think it takes some time to see that in the 2023 season.
