The Kansas City Chiefs' biggest free agent steal is already impressing at OTAs.
Drue Tranquill is a guy the Chiefs got for very cheap and could be one of the biggest free agent steals in the whole 2023 free agency. Steal as in the value is great and steal as in they stole him from their division rival in the Los Angeles Chargers.
With Nick Bolton and Willie Gay Jr. in the linebacker room already, adding a guy like Tranquill makes the room even better, and he is already impressing and turning heads in OTAs.
"Really happy with what they've [Charles Omenihu and Drue Tranquill] done at this point and where they're at and I'm glad we got them," I just think both of those guys elevate their positions. I think that gives us a lot. We'll see how we work them all in. It's going to take a little while. Right now from what I have seen, Drue has made a lot of plays."
The Chiefs by no means needed to go after another linebacker in free agency, and they actually didn't have one on their radar. Tranquill was a guy they had learned about through JuJu Smith Schuster's agent, so to get him for pennies on the dollar is great for the Chiefs.
Tranquill is a guy that has great athleticism – maybe not as athletic as Gay Jr., but still athletic – but his instincts are what really show in his game. He always knows where he needs to be whether it be in the run game or pass game.
Tranquill is coming off the best season in his career and is joining a position group that is starting to really look stacked. But to hear he has been impressing some people lets everyone know that he is a guy to watch for in OTAs more.
He and Willie Gay will be fighting for that starting spot all summer long. Just because we aren't hearing anything about Gay doesn't really mean anything at all, but since we are hearing things about Tranquill, that does mean something. It means he is turning heads.
If he ends up getting that starting spot, I think he could have one heck of a season, and who knows, maybe he could end up the biggest steal of all of free agency. It's definitely possible.
