It's safe to say San Francisco 49ers wideout Deebo Samuel had a very disappointing 2022 campaign after a 2021 season that saw him break plenty of records en route to over 1,700 yards from scrimmage and 15 total touchdowns (including passing TDs).
Apparently, it was worse than that. And Samuel admitted that himself when he spoke to reporters on the 49ers' first day of mandatory minicamp.
Samuel's contract negotiations were a big talking point last offseason and apparently, it was more than just that. A big factor in his poor play was the lack of an actual offseason because of all the distractions that came with the contract negotiations – and Samuel wasn't afraid to admit it was a distraction.
"Yea, it was kind of a distraction," Samuel admitted. "… The main focus, this year, is to get back to what I did in 2021. Not even during the season, just the summer of getting back into the groove of things and getting back into the routine."
Samuel finished 2022 with a little more than 850 scrimmage yards and five total touchdowns. Sure, he dealt with injuries throughout the season, but it was 100% clear he wasn't the dominant player that stole the show in 2021.
Hopefully Samuel can get back to form with a full, focused offseason. It's safe to say the 49ers certainly feel that way.
