The SEC is expected to move to a new scheduling format with Oklahoma and Texas set to join the conference in 2024.
What the format will look like, however, is still being debated.
For a while, it appeared that it was a lock that the SEC would be moving to a nine-game schedule that includes three permanent opponents and six rotating opponents. A new report from Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger, though, suggests that a nine-game schedule won't be happening — at least not in 2024.
Dellenger reported on Monday that the likely outcome this spring for the SEC scheduling debate is a temporary eight-game schedule in 2024 that features one game against a traditional rival (for the Tennessee Vols, for example, their matchup would likely be against the Vanderbilt Commodores).
From SI.com: Under consideration is a one-year, temporary eight-game Data conference schedule in 2024 that will, at least for one year, preserve both primary and secondary rivalries…..The temporary, one-year eight-game model is a placeholder for a potential nine-game schedule to start in 2025, if ESPN enhances the deal.
It seems like a nine-game SEC schedule will eventually happen. But the conference and ESPN are going to have to work out a deal to address the revenue generated from the extra conference game. And anytime money is involved, it's almost guaranteed that a quick resolution won't be happening.
With the College Football Playoff set to expand in 2024, the eight-game schedule could be a massive benefit for SEC programs. Tennessee, specifically, would get the benefit of an "easier" game against Vanderbilt. It's unclear how the rest of the schedule would shake out. With Oklahoma and Texas joining the conference in 2024, it's possible that the traditional East and West division wouldn't remain in place.
We should have some clarity on the SEC's plans in the coming weeks, but it looks like the nine-game schedule will have to wait at least a couple of years.
