Former Tennessee Vols QB Joe Milton gets a fitting honor as NFL training camps open
Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joe Milton is entering his third season in the NFL and his second with the Dallas Cowboys.
Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton received a fitting honor this week as NFL training camps get underway.
Milton, a sixth-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, is entering his third season in the NFL and his second with the Dallas Cowboys (Milton was traded from New England to Dallas following his rookie season).
The former Vol has long been known for his elite arm strength, so it should come as no surprise that Milton landed at the top of Madden 27’s “throw power” list this week.
Milton served as the backup to Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott last season, but he’s not guaranteed to serve in that same role in 2026.
The former Tennessee quarterback is battling veteran Sam Howell for the backup job in training camp.
“I think we’re always trying to raise the level and improve the (quarterback) room any chance we get,” said Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer earlier this summer when asked why Dallas brought in another quarterback to compete with Milton. “… You’re always looking to build as much depth as you can. And a guy like Sam Howell — when you think about it, it’s crazy. Sam Howell has more starts than (former Cowboys backup quarterback) Cooper Rush. Which is because [Howell] started the one year in Washington. He’s been exposed to a lot. He’s been in a lot of different systems, which I think is great for all of us.”
Milton made one of the best plays of training camp so far on Wednesday with a dart to the sideline that was caught by wide receiver Jonathan Mingo.
There’s a long way to go before the backup job is settled, but that’s a nice start for Milton.
