The Detroit Lions are out to prove to the rest of the football world that they are to be taken seriously as a contender in 2023. A productive offseason has the Lions positioned to make some noise in the upcoming season, but the must first pass an early litmus test to begin the year on the right track.

Detroit’s regular season schedule was revealed on Thursday and contained plenty of exciting matchups. But before the Lions shift their focus to the regular season, they must first pass an early test in the preseason.

The Lions' preseason schedule was officially released with dates and times on Monday. Included in the release was an announcement that Detroit will be holding joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of their clash slated for Week 2 in the preseason in the Motor City.

“Preseason Week 2. We’ll go up there,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said in his Friday press conference.

The Lions held joint practices with a different AFC South foe last season by traveling down to Indianapolis to line up against the Colts for a week. But this year’s practice sessions are far more intriguing.

Jacksonville and Detroit share plenty of similarities. Both are trending in the right direction after a disappointing decade. They each possess young talent on the offensive side of the ball with defenses that aren’t to be overlooked.

Essentially, the Jags are the AFC’s version of the Lions.

The Lions must ensure that they hit the ground running after a strong preseason. After all, the Kansas City Chiefs are waiting in the wings for what should be a thrilling season opener.
