The Stefon Diggs controversy may finally be over.
It's been a whirlwind of the past 24 hours for the Bills Mafia. What was supposed to be an exciting day of mandatory camp immediately turned into something entirely different after a few words from Sean McDermott: "Very concerned."
The Bills All-Pro receiver wasn't at the first day of the mandatory minicamp and McDermott added an unfathomable amount of fuel to the fire with his comments on the absence.
It appears that it all may be water under the bridge as Diggs was at the second day of mandatory camp. Diggs' presence spread like wildfire across social media with many of the Bills Mafia just being excited one of their favorite players was back in action.
Diggs could be seen shaking hands and stretching with Josh Allen and going through some different drills. At the end of the day, Diggs is here to stay and he's ready to compete, despite any cryptic messaging on social media.
Not surprisingly, Sean McDermott was asked about the situation immediately after practice. This was the first time the Bills' head coach was able to give his side of the story and provide the world with a small glimpse of what really went down.
"There's a lot of things out there that aren't accurate." McDermott started, "Let me be clear, Stef did everything that he was asked to do. He was here Monday and executed his physical on time… Tuesday, reported for meetings at which time we had a good conversation, great communication. We got to a point yesterday where we just felt like we all needed a break and some space. I gave Stef permission to get some space and head out and then picked up those conversations after practice."
McDermott continued, "Let me make it clear, it was not Stef leaving unexcused, he was excused by me. Those conversations have got us to, what I think, is a great spot."
Yesterday, McDermott had expressed he was "very concerned" with Diggs' absence. However, after 24 hours, the head coach elaborated further, providing yet another wrinkle in the Diggs controversy.
McDermott spoke about perhaps the miscommunication with his wording or is simply trying to play damage control. Either way, he provided reporters with some answers.
"Whenever a player has something going on, or misses, not here for some reason, I am concerned. That's my sentiment with any player, in particular a player as important to us as Stef. I get concerned when players miss for reasons off the field, for reasons on the field, whether it be they're injured or whatever it is, that's just how I am. When I say very concerned, I am very concerned because it's a situation with one of our players and it was something we needed to work through. Those are healthy conversations that happen and I'm extremely appreciative of those conversations… I feel good about that."
Regardless if fans ever get a true answer on what went down is not important. Instead, Diggs showed up to work and is doing what he can to make the team better.
The Bills' front office keeps everything close to the chest and this situation is no different. McDermott gave just a small glimpse of what's been going down between the two parties.
Allen has his favorite target back at camp, and the Bills Mafia can breathe easy. The rest is just noise.
