The greatest tight end of all time just made a bold statement Chiefs fans will love about the 2023 season.
Travis Kelce is, to many people, the greatest to ever do it at his position, and he certainly has just as much of a case as Rob Gronkowski does. However, he is getting up there in age and won't be getting any younger anytime soon.
Kelce is 33 years old, which has sparked interest the last few seasons in conversations about finding his replacement in the draft. There has always been that thought that the Chiefs would do that soon, but keep pushing it back.
Maybe it's because he is still the best in the league. Or it's because the organization loves what the Chiefs already have on the roster in that room.
"We have the best tight end room in the league right now," Kelce told reporters.
The Chiefs may feel the same way. Who else has several guys that can do some of everything in their tight-end room? Noah Gray made some huge plays late last season and even in the postseason. Jody Fortson is a fan favorite because if he is in the red zone, the ball is being put in his hands.
The Chiefs are so good at developing their talent on the roster that they are reassured about going out and drafting a tight end. Kelce is still at the top of his game and has three more years left on his contract, per Over the Cap.
Kelce being a mentor is a huge reason tight end room is as good as it is. And hey, Kelce loves playing that role.
"But coming to work and being around this tight end group, man, we got a fun group that just loves to play this game and wants to make plays no matter how they got to do it," Kelce continued. "Whether we're blocking, whether we're catching the ball downfield, or just finding a way to get somebody else open. And that's the beauty of the tight-end position; we're pretty selfless, and whatever you need, we can do."
This offense does feature many different things the tight end will do. Just a few weeks ago, we heard head coach Andy Reid discuss that Gray could be a guy that sees some time at the fullback position in those packages.
And the younger guys will only see more in this offense. They will only get more involved, making the offense more dynamic.
"The young guys, the guys that are kind of like still getting molded into this offense that you'll see this year – any bit of advice I can give to anybody – and that's kind of across the league – I'll give nuggets of gold over here at Tight End U coming up next week or what I think are nuggets of gold (laughter)."
So, while Kelce was making a bold statement, he was right. The Chiefs do have the best tight-end room in the league. Part of that is because of his skill set and talent, but it's also because of the relationship, chemistry, and mentorship he has on the other guys too.
