One former Denver Broncos starter may have a chance to get his starting job back based on the way Sean Payton feels.
Okwuegbunam was once a starter for the Broncos at the tight end position. In 2021, he started six games for the Broncos. Last year, rookie tight end Greg Dulcich saw the field the most out of that room. When the Broncos saw what Dulcich could do, Okwuegbunam started getting listed as inactive.
Then, against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 17, Okwuegbunam got activated for the first time in three games, and he put up three catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. We once again saw why the Broncos liked him so much. Now, he has a fresh start with a new head coach, position coach, and offensive coordinator. Okwuegbunam can show once again that he deserves to be a starter.
Head coach Sean McVay believes now is the time for the now fourth-year tight end.
"He can run. He's athletic. I think consistency," Payton told reporters earlier this week. "He's made progress. He's at that stage where this is the time."
A few things could still be keeping Okwuegbunam from getting that starting job back. One is the fact that Dulcich is really, really good. Coach Payton and other players have raved about him all offseason. Payton even once said he would be the "joker" in their offense, in reference to a joker in a deck of cards.
And the Broncos also added Adam Trautman, who was previously on the New Orleans Saints playing for Sean Payton before, so you know they have a relationship.
It won't be impossible for Okwuegbunam to get his starting job back, but it will be hard. This is definitely another storyline to watch in training camp.
