Elijah Mitchell, the 49ers' backup running back, is one of the best backups in the league, which is what he does. He is a guy that could be the starting running back for a few teams in the league and is so good that he still has a role in the offense, even with Christian McCaffrey on the team.
One NFL analyst has him as the seventh-best backup running back in the league. Here is what he had to say about the soon-to-be third-year running back:
Elijah Mitchell (49ers) Through two NFL seasons, the former sixth-rounder has missed a combined 18 games due to injury, making him a somewhat fragile complement to Christian McCaffrey. Still, when upright, he's been incredibly smooth as a focal point for Kyle Shanahan's offense, showcasing solid vision in relief and as a starter. –Cody Benjamin, CBS Sports
The 49ers' offense has many skilled guys on their team, including some underrated guys. Sure, the fan base knows about Mitchell, but the casual football fan may not. 2023 could be a big season for him. He has two seasons left until he is an unrestricted free agent, so I'd expect him to do a lot when he does come into the game.
He is as good as he is as a backup because of the things he brings to the table as a backup or even a starting running back when he has to start. He is a guy that can run between the tackles a bit, outside the tackles, and catch the ball out of the backfield.
He is a guy that you could even put in the slot. He is perfect for what the 49ers like to do. They like running backs that can do everything, and it's almost like he is a lite version of McCaffrey. Mitchell is one of the best running backs in the league.
