The New Orleans Saints no longer have Sean Payton. The Denver Broncos do. That doesn't mean that he doesn't still have ties with some of his former players. though. Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas had a historic season under Payton, and the former Saints HC is using that to his advantage at his new gig, according to ProFootballTalk.
One of his receivers is studying Thomas' film closely to learn about getting open more often. Broncos wideout Courtland Sutton wants to improve, and Thomas is a great role model for that. His development with New Orleans was quite impressive.
Thomas' 2019 is almost notable for Sutton. The Saints wideout set the NFL record for receptions in a single season with 149. Thomas totaled 1,725 receiving yards and nine touchdowns during that year, too. A season anywhere near that would be massive for Sutton and Denver.
“I actually just got — not too long ago, maybe a week or two ago — I just got Michael Thomas’ 2019 targets from his year that he broke the record. [I’m] just diving into it [to] be able to see how he may have run a route that we are learning right now. Figuring out ways to get open.” — Sutton
Sutton, as well as Broncos fans, hope that Payton will be able to rekindle his talent. The past couple seasons have been a struggle for him due to inconsistencies and injuries. A bounce-back year for Sutton will be important for Broncos QB Russell Wilson as well.
The Saints should get a thank-you card from Payton and Denver if that occurs this year.
