That's been the simple question for years between the Tampa Bay Buccaneer fans and the front office regarding the return of the franchise's revered "creamsicle" uniforms. The team's original uniform is one that is largely revered and welcomed by the fan base.
The color, design, and Bucco Bruce logo harken back to the days of the great Lee Roy Selmon and the excitement of the early and hopeful days of the franchise. The team wore the uniforms from 1976 to 1996, and then once per season from 2009 through 2012. The team changed their uniform design in the offseason before the 2014 season, and the beloved duds went the way of the dodo. At least until now.
In February 2022, the franchise announced that the uniforms would be making their triumphant return in 2023 due to supply chain issues.
Accordingly, fans were robbed of seeing the greatest player in NFL history – Tom Brady – wearing the greatest uniform design in NFL history due to forces beyond the franchise's control.
However, the team followed through on their promise and announced Monday when that return would be. And it will be against a familiar foe from that yesteryear era. The Detroit Lions vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers matchup on October 15, 2023 will see the return of the creamsicles.
Given that the Lions and the Buccaneers are former NFC Central division rivals, it's fitting that this particular matchup was chosen for the retro look. As it turns out, it won't be just the uniforms that will have a throwback feel. Raymond James Stadium will also be transformed (as much as it can be) into the 'The Big Sombrero', with retro field stencils, stadium bunting, and video board assets implemented to assist with the theme, per the team's announcement.
"The return of our beloved Creamsicle uniforms for this special game is something that our fans have been passionate about for many years, and we are excited to celebrate the history of our franchise with a unique, dedicated Creamsicle gameday experience," Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford said on Buccaneers.com. "This is more than a throwback game; it is a celebration of our legacy and some of the great moments and players that make our story so special to our fans."
Finally, after more than a decade, fans know when they'll have their chance to see their Buccaneers trot out of the Raymond James Stadium tunnel in their favorite uniforms.
