The Kansas City Chiefs veteran safety had a powerful message about where the team is now compared to last year.

This defense improved significantly last season as the year went on. That doesn't mean the defense was bad initially, but you can tell they started catching their stride as the year went on.

That's what happens when you play a bunch of rookies vital snaps. We see some big things coming into year two with more time in the Steve Spagnuolo system with the new guys from last season.

Even one defensive player had a powerful message about where the team is right now as a defense compared to last year, and it should scare other NFL teams.

"Where we are right now – last year we had so many new faces, myself included – where we are right now on the communication side and really knowing the defense, we are light years ahead of where we were last year," Justin Reid told the media on Thursday.

"It’s really exciting. You can feel it in the communication and the energy out there. Guys know the program now and are bought into the system, and it’s about bringing the new guys that we have a long and catching them up. I think it will be easier than last year because last year there were just so many new faces; it just takes a little bit longer to bring it all together."

No matter who you ask, anyone will tell you the Chiefs are known for their offense. And they are. They are a team that is constantly one of the best offenses in the league, not to mention having the most notable and best player on their team Patrick Mahomes.

However, their defense can be really, really good in 2023. They could be better than last year and were an underrated unit in 2022. That alone should scare the rest of the league. You gave the best offense in the league last year an even better defense than they had just after winning the Super Bowl, and you can't tell me that doesn't strike fear in some teams.

Then you factor in what we mentioned earlier, that the Chiefs played five rookies last year and started three for a large portion of the season. Three rookies were in the secondary alone, and all made game-saving plays in the postseason.

It's only going to get better from here.
