The Philadelphia Eagles have sky-high expectations for the 2023 NFL season.
After coming just short of a Super Bowl LVII victory, the team is in good position to make another run. The Eagles entered this offseason in a very precarious cap situation, but somehow managed to keep the core intact.
One player who was not kept around is former starting RB Miles Sanders. To replace Sanders, the Eagles added two backs who one national media outlet thinks could be two of the best offseason moves.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports recently predicted which offseason moves will produce the best results.
The Eagles received praise for the additions of Rashaad Penny and D'Andre Swift, with the two being lumped together. Regarding the addition of the duo, Benjamin said the following:
Call it the discount duo. Instead of paying Miles Sanders to return as their starting ball-carrier, the reigning NFC champions took Swift off the Lions' hands and inked Penny to a one-year, prove-it deal in free agency. Neither veteran has been especially healthy throughout his career, but both have flashed elite breakaway ability. In tandem, alongside Jalen Hurts and returning backs Boston Scott and Kenny Gainwell, they have a real path to efficient, explosive production in Philadelphia.
Sanders had a better season than most realize in 2022, finishing with the fifth-most rushing yards in the league. Sanders had 1,269 yards on the ground with 11 touchdowns and just one fumble.
The impressive season led Sanders to sign a four-year, $25M deal with the Carolina Panthers. The Eagles were unwilling to commit that much to one RB, instead opting to sign Penny and trade for Swift.
Swift is one of the best receiving backs in the league, having 156 receptions over just three seasons. Penny has battled injuries throughout his five-year career, but has flashed signs of brilliance. Penny average a whopping 6.3 yards per attempt during the 2021 NFL season.
While Sanders received over $6M annually with $13M guaranteed, Swift and Penny are both slated to make less than $2M in 2023.
If both stay healthy, it's easy to see how this duo could represent a massive steal for the Eagles. Even if both suffer injury problems again, the Eagles can simply let them walk after the season.
