Damar Hamlin returning to the field is something they make movies about.
In our very own way-too-early award predictions for the upcoming NFL season, Mike Payton of AtoZ Sports handed out perhaps the easiest award in history to Damar Hamlin: Comeback player of the year.
Payton expressed just how easy it was to hand this over to Hamlin. After quite literally dying on the football field and within a year jumping back onto the field, there isn't anyone more deserving of the award.
Everyone please move out of my way while I head down the lane and drop this layup in. This one is too easy and obvious. It'll also be very much deserved. Hamlin had one of the scariest moments in NFL history in 2022 when he collapsed on the field after colliding with Tee Higgins. The collapse was result of a cardiac arrest. Luckily the Bills training staff worked quickly and was able to restore his heartbeat on the field. Those guys deserve a bunch of awards too. Hamlin was cleared to return to football in April and I, for one, can't wait to hear the reception from Bills mafia when he takes the field for the first time.
After doctors gave Hamlin the greenlight to return to football activities, the talented safety has been back at practice doing some light work with the team. Just seeing Hamlin with his helmet on doing drills is nothing short of incredible.
Hamlin won't have too many expectations coming into next season. With Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde healthy once again, it'll be their backfield. Hamlin will be coming in, most likely, whenever they need to rest or if there's an injury.
In his career, so far, Hamlin has amassed 91 total tackles, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 29 games played.
Hamlin has already defied all the odds and cemented his spot in NFL history. The rest is just gravy. As Payton suggested, we can't wait to hear Bills Mafia when Hamlin is announced and runs back on the field again.
