Bills lose offensive lineman in unexpected fashion right before the Rams game
Jedrick Wills signed with the Arizona Cardinals off Buffalo’s practice squad, and the Bills receive no compensation for losing the veteran tackle.
The Buffalo Bills lost offensive line depth this week. Tackle Jedrick Wills signed with the Arizona Cardinals off the Bills’ practice squad, giving Arizona an experienced option at a position where it suddenly has a pressing need.
Wills is a 27-year-old tackle and a former first-round pick from 2020. He had been with Buffalo since Aug. 31. Because he was on the practice squad, he was available to sign with any other team’s active roster, and that’s exactly what happened.
The Cardinals lost left tackle Paris Johnson to a torn biceps for the rest of the season. Therefore, Arizona needed a veteran who could step in quickly, and Wills fits that description. The Bills don’t receive any compensation for losing him. They simply open a practice squad spot.
How the Bills’ tackle depth looks now
Right now, Buffalo has 10 offensive linemen on the 53-man roster. Only four of them are tackles. Dion Dawkins starts at left tackle and Spencer Brown starts at right tackle. Behind them, the Bills have Tylan Grable and Jude Bowry on the active roster.
Outside of that group, the team also has Chase Lundt, a former sixth-round pick, on the practice squad at tackle. That’s five tackles in total when you count the practice squad.
It’s not necessarily a deep group, so losing Wills is not ideal. Nonetheless, the Bills are relatively comfortable with the situation. And that’s because the starters are firmly established, and the backups aren’t complete unknowns.
Grable has already played for Buffalo, and he has performed at a reasonable level when called upon. Bowry is a fourth-round pick this year, so the team has invested in his development. Neither is a proven starter, but both give the Bills enough coverage for now.
A long road for Jedrick Wills
Wills started his career with the Cleveland Browns, and he was a productive player early on. However, multiple injuries affected his performance over time.
He has played 3,686 offensive snaps in the NFL. Most of them came at left tackle, although he also took some snaps for the Browns as a sixth offensive lineman over the past few years. The interesting aspect is how rarely he stayed on the field for a full season. Wills surpassed 1,000 snaps in only one season, mainly because of the significant injuries he dealt with throughout his career.
His last regular season game came in 2024 with Cleveland. Wills stayed out of the NFL in 2025 before returning this season. He spent five months with the Chicago Bears, including training camp and the preseason, but Chicago released him in August. Right after that, he signed with Buffalo’s practice squad.
Why Arizona made sense for Wills
For the Bills, adding Wills was a bet. The idea was that Buffalo could potentially get him healthy and back on track, with little risk attached to a practice squad contract. A tackle with that much experience is a valuable piece to stash.
But the practice squad comes with an obvious vulnerability. Any team can sign those players to its active roster, and the Cardinals had a bigger opportunity to offer. With Johnson out for the season, Wills now has a realistic path to playing time in Arizona, something he wasn’t going to find behind Dawkins and Brown in Buffalo.
