The Tennessee Vols will start the 2023 season as one of the upper-echelon teams in the SEC.
247Sports dropped their preseason SEC power rankings on Thursday and the Vols are ranked among the upper third of SEC programs.
The national sports media outlet has Tennessee ranked as the No. 4 team in the SEC to start the season, behind Georgia (No. 1), LSU (No. 2), and Alabama (No.3).
From 247Sports: Tennessee's stock is the highest its been during the preseason since 2016 following a nine-win season. The Vols just won 11 games for only the second time this century and have a coach picking up steam nationally as one of the game's brightest up-and-comers. Josh Heupel's squad will have to navigate through a gauntlet once again and do so without several of their stars. Tennessee replaces 78% of its offensive production from a season ago, one of the highest marks in the Power Five. That doesn't affect where we've slotted the Vols in the SEC preseason power rankings, however. Quarterback Joe Milton is an elite talent and this is the only team in the conference expected to start 10 seniors on defense.
It's been a while since the Vols were viewed as one of the top teams in the SEC.
In 2021, for example, 247Sports ranked Tennessee at No. 12 in their preseason power rankings. It's simply incredible how quickly Josh Heupel and his staff have been able to turn things around in Knoxville. And the exciting part for Vols fans is that Heupel and his assistants are really just getting started.
