College football expert Phil Steele, one of the more respected voices among college football analysts, made quite the statement about the Tennessee Vols and the Georgia Bulldogs recently while previewing the upcoming season.
Steele, who noted that the "majority" of his power ratings have the Vols winning at least 10 games in 2023, believes Tennessee is the only team in the SEC East that can truly challenge Georgia.
“This is the one team in the East that can challenge Georgia,” wrote Steele (via On3). “The majority of my power ratings are calling for another double-digit win season.”
Steele isn't necessarily picking Tennessee to beat Georgia, he just thinks the Vols have the best shot of any SEC East program to knock of the Bulldogs in 2023 (by the way, the 2023 season will be the last season that the SEC East and SEC West are a thing).
Tennessee hasn't defeated Georgia since 2016 when Josh Dobbs completed a Hail Mary to Jauan Jennings to secure the win for the Vols.
Most recently, the Vols lost 27-13 to Georgia in Athens (in 2022). Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings for that matchup. It was the first time the Vols had been ranked No. 1 since winning the national championship in 1998.
Georgia's most difficult game in 2023 will likely be their matchup against Tennessee. The only other games that could give them some trouble is a road game against Auburn on September 30 or the home game against Ole Miss on November 11.
For now, it's hard to see anyone other than Georgia as the favorites to win it all in 2023.
