The Detroit Lions have an opportunity to further capitalize on one of the most exciting offseason in recent memory. The 2023 NFL Draft provides two opportunities within the first round for the Lions to add to a roster that many believe is capable of winning the NFC North.
The Lions have done most of their offseason heavy lifting in the secondary. Detroit made major splashes in the free agency pool by inking S C.J. Gardner-Johnson, CB Cameron Sutton and CB Emmanuel Moseley.
Those three additions should be enough to bring the Lions’ 31st ranked pass defense from 2022 to a respectable unit moving forward. With that being said, Detroit still has a void at the cornerback position after trading former first-rounder CB Jeff Okudah to the Atlanta Falcons.
In Pro Football Network’s latest mock draft the Lions find the perfect upgrade from Okudah with the No. 6 overall pick.
CB Christian Gonzalez – Oregon
From PFN: The best pure man coverage cornerback in the class, Christian Gonzalez is the easy pick here, and the Detroit Lions need an answer at the position. Flashing brilliance in his lone season at Oregon, Gonzalez put forth a teach-tape clinic in each game as the season progressed.
Gonzalez would be a perfect fit on the outside against some of the game’s elite wide receivers. Drafting the Oregon standout would also allow Sutton and Moseley to play in the slot if the situation ever calls for it.
The Lions would be set for years at the cornerback position if the team elects to nab Gonzales early on. In today’s pass-first NFL it’s impossible to have too many capable defenders in the secondary.
