It seems as though the Buccaneers won't be able to escape their mistakes of the 2022 season.

Sure, the results were bad and the team failed to live up to any of the preseason expectations, but Tampa was always able to blame these shortcomings on a new head coach that was thrust into his role with little time to plan.

Unfortunately for Todd Bowles, it seems as though he is going to start running out of excuses soon if he continues making decisions at his current rate.

Recent news regarding Bowles and an important decision by the team won't help the struggling head coach all that much. Who really passes up the option to bring back a franchise great when the team is struggling at the position the player dominated at for the better part of the decade?

Bowles and company refusing Gerald McCoy's offer to return bit them immediately. McCoy was right; the defensive line was terrible for most of the year. Would McCoy's addition truly help as a member of the active roster? Perhaps not, but it is ludicrous to think he wouldn't make a difference as a practice squad player.

This was an obvious mistake by Todd Bowles. This isn't the first mistake that he has made as a coach, and sadly, it seems entirely possible that it won't be his last mistake either.

It was a weird choice for a defensive head coach to be so accepting of a terrible defensive line in 2022, but weird choices have characterized the Todd Bowles HC tenure in Tampa, and they will probably be the reason why this head coaching stint ends in disappointment rather than glory.

Gerald McCoy should've received another chance to play for the Buccaneers. If he was also willing to take a reduced role and serve as a veteran in the locker room, it was all the better for Tampa. What a missed opportunity.
