Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery will be tasked with filling a Jamaal Williams sized hole in 2023. The Lions have witnessed first-hand what Montgomery is capable of with the ball in his hands, which has one of the team’s offensive lineman beaming with excitement.

Taylor Decker is entering his eight season in the NFL, all with Detroit. He’s logged 97 starts in that time frame and knows exactly what it takes to win up front.

Decker has seen his fair share of running backs come and go since he arrived in 2016. But the addition of Montgomery has clearly made an impression on the left tackle.

“Obviously I know of him from his time in Chicago,” Decker said on Tuesday,
“I mean, the guy is a playmaker. Durable, a lot of carries, strong. I mean, I've seen I've seen our guys try to tackle him and it's gonna be fun to see that kind of one-two punch because I've seen it from the opposite perspective of what he can do. And it's going to be fun for us as a line to be able to try and get that guy to the second level.”

Montgomery struggled to find his rhythm in 2022, but still managed to rush for 801 yards on 201 carries. His hard-nosed style of running has produced 26 touchdowns, a chunk of which have come by getting the tough yards up near the goal line.

Montgomery’s strengths compliment those of D’Andre Swift, who the Lions hope can stay healthy for the duration of the 2023 season. This duo has the chance to make some serious noise next season, which will only make Decker’s offensive line look that much better.
