The Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets may have finally agreed on the required terms to trade Aaron Rodgers, but that doesn't mean Green Bay is done carving out its quarterback room.
As it currently stands, the Packers only have two quarterbacks on their roster in their new starter Jordan Love and the new No. 2 option in Danny Etling. Both players have very, very limited NFL playing experience. In fact, the two players have 83 pass attempts between the two of them and all of those belong to Love.
In other words: The Packers are going to add another quarterback, whether it's through the 2023 NFL Draft or free agency.
"Well, right now we only have two [quarterbacks] on the roster. So, whether it's this weekend or somewhere down the road, we're gonna have to," Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said Monday. "I'd like to have three at least three before we get to any of the throwing stuff. We're not there yet, but we're going to add to that that room. Whether we end up with three and go into camp, or whether we have four we'll kind of see."
It makes more sense for the Packers to draft a veteran that can come in and not just provide some stability in case of emergency, but also provide some sort of mentorship for Love and even Etling.
That won't stop the Packers from taking a guy in the draft, however. And, like Gutekunst said, they could still draft a guy and sign one in free agency.
"There are some some guys in this draft are very high on and if they happen to be at the right spots, then I won't hesitate," said Gutekunst. "But we'll kind of see how that shakes out."
It'll be interesting to see what the Packers' final version of their 2023 QB room looks like, but there are two things we know for sure: Aaron Rodgers won't be in there and Jordan Love is the starter.
