He's made a handful of comments regarding New Orleans. That shouldn't surprise anyone as Payton has always been known to speak his mind. Plus, he spent over a decade with the Saints, so he's got plenty of experiences in the bank with the team.
His latest comments are regarding the analytics departments between the Denver Broncos and New Orleans Saints.
Payton believes that the analytics department in Denver prevails over the one in New Orleans. Of course, he would never say the opposite of this now that he is coaching the Broncos. Regardless, he says that their analytics department is on a different level than he was used to in New Orleans.
“I’m like that driver of a new car that still hasn’t figured out how to get the seat warmers on. It’s pretty impressive, and it’s new for me in a good way. I’m talking about the efficiency of the process. We weren’t as far ahead (in New Orleans) when we were looking at some of these players as to being able to pick up and access the information as quickly.”
These comments sound like a bit of an excuse for some misses during the draft while he was the HC of the Saints. He had a lot of control in New Orleans, and he could have upgraded that department of the organization if he felt like it was necessary. It's clear that GM Mickey Loomis would have made the changes that Payton requested.
No matter what – Payton still isn't done discussing his time with the Saints.
