The San Francisco 49ers traded up in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft to land a sleeper.

San Fransisco selected Penn State defensive back Ji'Ayir Brown with the No. 87 overall selection.

Brown started his career at the junior college level before transferring to Penn State.

Brown didn't have a great combine performance which is one of the main reasons why he slipped in the draft. But he's the type of player that seems to be more comfortable while playing actual football than running drills.

The former Penn State standout is a great run defender and he has solid coverage skills. He can play any of the safety positions or he can line up as a slot cornerback.

Brown will give the 49ers a versatile defensive back that can be used in a variety of ways. He's also a bit of a ball hawk as he totaled 10 interceptions over the last two seasons.

Brown's biggest weakness is that he can be manipulated at times by the quarterback. But that's something that can and should improve at the next level.

The 49ers may have landed a longtime defensive starter in the third round which is rare.
