As soon as the 2023 NFL Draft ended, the Kansas City Chiefs signed an undrafted free agent that the rest of the league apparently forgot about during the draft.
According to VolQuest's Austin Price, Tennessee Vols offensive lineman Jerome Carvin is signing with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent.
It's a bit surprising that Carvin wasn't drafted.
The former Vols standout wasn't invited to the NFL Draft Combine, but his resumé suggests he should've been a mid-round pick.
Carvin started all 13 games this past season at left guard for the Vols. He played 860 snaps and allowed just one sack.
The Memphis native started games at left guard, right guard, and center during his time at Tennessee (43 career SEC starts), so he'll bring plenty of versatility to the Chiefs' offensive line.
Carvin was also consistently praised as one of the main team leaders on the Vols' 11-2 squad last season.
"He played through some things, he was just unbelievable," said Tennessee offensive line coach Glen Elarbee while discussing Carvin earlier this spring. "I think the first place you miss him is just in the room. Just who he was as a person, his attitude every day, his leadership. Probably one of my favorite players of all time. Then, you just didn't realize how lucky you were you had a starting left guard that could take only a minimal number of snaps at center during a week and if something happened, take off the glove, go to center, and not miss a beat."
The last time the Chiefs added an underrated Vols offensive lineman to the roster, it worked out pretty well (Trey Smith, a sixth-round pick by KC in 2021, was teammates at UT with Carvin).
Maybe Carvin can earn a starting spot on the same offensive line as his former Tennessee teammate.
