Earlier in the offseason, Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell expressed their desire to add capable bodies to the team’s quarterback room. After Saturday’s news, the Lions appear to be one step closer to achieving that goal in a major way.

The Lions are confident in Jared Goff’s abilities heading into the 2023 season. He showed significant signs of improvement last season, but Nate Sudfeld is the only other signal caller on the roster.

But that could soon change after ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports the Lions have sent Teddy Bridgewater “a strong contract offer.”

It’s important to note that Campbell and Bridgewater spent 2018-2019 together with the New Orleans Saints. Bridgewater went 5-1 in six starts during that timeframe while Campbell served as an assistant head coach and tight ends coach.

Bridgewater has played for five teams in eight seasons after being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 2015 Pro Bowler spent last season with the Miami Dolphins, serving as Tua Tagovailoa’s backup, but injuries limited him to just two starts in the starter's extended absence.

At 30 years old, Bridgewater brings plenty of experience to the quarterback room. He would immediately be considered as one of the NFL’s top backups, and is capable of winning games at this level if something were to happen to Goff.

Bridgewater has a 33-32 record in his 65 career starts. He’s tossed 75 touchdowns compared to just 47 interceptions in his career. Bridgewater’s decision making is one of his strongest assets.

If the Lions are able to ink Bridgewater, he would become one of the most impactful insurance policies in football. If anybody knows how to get the best out of Teddy Two Gloves, it’s going to be Campbell.
