The Denver Broncos didn't draft a player on the first night of the 2023 NFL Draft. That doesn't mean that the team hasn't been doing their due diligence over the past few days. In fact, Denver may be looking to make a bigger splash outside of the draft.
The front office was forced to sit by and watch as the organization's first-round picks had been traded away to secure Russell Wilson and Sean Payton. If the team is able to turn things around it would undoubtedly be a worthwhile investment.
However, it's what happened before the draft even began that has started to make headlines across the NFL.
Denver is linked to former number two overall pick Chase Young. Recently, it was announced that the Washington Commanders would not be picking up the fifth-year option on the talented pass rusher.
Admittedly, Young missing time over the past few years would make it yet another risky investment from an organization that needs to be making smart moves. Over the past two seasons, Young has played in just 12 games totaling 1.5 sacks and five QB hits during that time.
When healthy, Young is a one-man wrecking crew that can almost single-handily turn the tide of a football game. Having Young join the likes of Zach Allen, Randy Gregory, and DJ Jones on the defensive line would be a nightmare for opposing offenses.
Sean Payton would be able to "steal" Young in that it most likely wouldn't take too much to get him from the Commanders. Washington, without exercising his fifth-year option, may be telling the league he is for sale, and the cost won't be too extreme. With Young being in the last year of his contract, Washington may be forced to part ways with him for a much lower cost than what they'd like in return.
Denver already has one of the best defenses in the NFL and could get even that much better with the addition of Young. Broncos fans may have thought night one of the NFL draft was boring. If the team were able to make a splash signing, we have a feeling they'd forget pretty quickly.
