The Kansas City Chiefs might be in the market for a new offensive coordinator.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday morning that there's strong mutual interest between Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and the Washington Commanders.

Bieniemy's contract expires after the 2022 season so he can make a lateral move without the Chiefs' permission.

Rapoport strongly suggested that Bieniemy will be the next offensive coordinator in Washington.

Going from Kansas City to Washington would seemingly be a step backward for Bieniemy. But the idea is that if he gets away from Andy Reid, he can dispel the idea that Reid is solely responsible for the Chiefs' offensive success.

Essentially, Bieniemy would be taking the job in Washington to "prove himself" as a head coach option.

If Bieniemy leave Kansas City as expected, the assumption is that senior assistant/quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy would take over as the Chiefs offensive coordinator.

Nagy was the Chiefs' offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017 before taking over as the Chicago Bears' head coach for four seasons. Nagy returned to Kansas City ahead of the 2022 season.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is a big fan of Nagy, but it's important to note that Mahomes started 0 games in 2017 when Nagy was the offensive coordinator in KC. So he doesn't really have any experience as the Chiefs' starting quarterback with Nagy calling plays.

Of course, this will still be Andy Reid's offense. The continuity would probably be a good thing for Mahomes and the rest of the offense. Ultimately, I'd be surprised if Reid hired anyone other than Nagy.
