Pro Football Focus made a free agent prediction this week that would be bad news for the Kansas City Chiefs.
PFF predicted where the top 50 free agents will sign this offseason and they think one of Kansas City's top players will sign with another team.
They have offensive tackle Orlando Brown signing with the New England Patriots this spring.
The Patriots are expected to let 2018 first-round pick tackle Isaiah Wynn walk in free agency after a tumultuous 2022 campaign, and Trent Brown is not a long-term solution at either tackle spot but can hypothetically slide back over to the right side.
It’s possible the Chiefs place a second consecutive franchise tag on Brown and/or work out a multi-year deal, but Patrick Mahomes’ elite ability to not let pressures become sacks makes it unnecessary to make a top-of-market investment on the blindside.
Brown didn’t really do much to change his perception this year; he is a good but not great tackle. New England has been aggressive in free agency in recent years and is desperate for help at the position, though. Brown earned a 60.0-plus pass-blocking grade in every 2022 contest from Week 5 on, with 11 grades above 70.0 over the stretch. He’d be a massive addition to this Patriots tackle group.

I usually agree with a lot of PFF's takes, but I have to disagree with this one.
No, Brown didn't perform like an elite offensive tackle in 2022, but he played quite well in the second half of the season.
But that's not the main reason why I disagree with PFF.
The idea that Kansas City doesn't need a good left tackle because Patrick Mahomes is adept at avoiding pressure is absurd.
Why wouldn't the Chiefs want to make Mahomes' life easier? Left tackle isn't a "plug n play" position in the NFL.
Losing Brown, a player the Chiefs traded a first-round draft pick for in 2021 (along with some additional picks), would be a negative for Kansas City this offseason. Then they'd have to go find a left tackle that fits in the Chiefs' plans and that wouldn't be easy.
The good news for KC fans, however, is that it's extremely unlikely this scenario happens.
Kansas City is going to try to extend Brown again this offseason. But before that, they'll likely place the franchise tag on him (which will cost $19.9 million, all guaranteed). So if an extension isn't worked out, Brown will still be in Kansas City next season.
I'd be surprised if Brown isn't in a Chiefs uniform next season. But you never say never in the NFL (Especially after last offseason), so we'll see how this plays out in the coming weeks/months.
