There's a potential nightmare scenario for the Miami Dolphins that could very much become a reality this week.
Earlier this offseason, the Dolphins reportedly hired Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator.
Fangio, who was the Denver Broncos' head coach from 2019 to 2021, joined the Philadelphia Eagles in a consultant role this season. That included helping the Eagles prepare for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.
Fangio was expected to head to Miami after the Super Bowl, but that hasn't happened yet. In fact, Fangio hasn't signed a contract yet with the Dolphins.
And now there's some concern that he never makes it to Miami.
The Eagles need a new defensive coordinator after the Arizona Cardinals hired Philly defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their new head coach.
Fangio was named by Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer as a potential option to replace Fangio in Philadelphia.
It's possible that Fangio is just dealing with some red tape as far as his contract with the Eagles (maybe the contract lasted slightly beyond the Super Bowl). But with Philadelphia needing a defensive coordinator, and Fangio having a season-long connection to the team, there should definitely be some concern about whether or not he actually joins the Dolphins in 2023.
We should get some clarity in the coming days, but Miami fans should brace themselves for the possibility that Fangio doesn't join the Dolphins' staff.
Update:
Nightmare watch is over. Fangio has officially signed his deal according to Ian Rapoport.
