Don’t cry because it is over. Smile because it happened. It is a sad day to be a Storm Duck enthusiast. The Miami Dolphins, with their preparations for the New York Jets now underway, are making some moves. A kicking change is here for Miami. But it’s time to say goodbye to a former project of the last regime.

Cornerback Storm Duck is being released, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. The news does not open up a roster spot for Miami, as he was on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and attempting to return from an injury from last season.

The Miami Dolphins are moving on from one of the final pet projects of the Mike McDaniel era

Duck drew more than his fair share of excitement upon making the Dolphins team back in 2024. In part because of having one of the most fun names in football. Duck made three starts and played in 14 games for the Miami Dolphins that season, then was tabbed as a starter for the team entering into the 2025 campaign. That season, which proved to be fatal to the old guard, saw Duck go down in the season-opening loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He surrendered his starting job to Rasul Douglas for good and played just 15 defensive snaps for the rest of the season due to injury.

Duck started the 2026 season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list amid recovery from that injury. He was a participant in practices the past few weeks for Miami in his effort to turn.

The Dolphins presumably did not like what they saw. His departure marks the exodus of yet another one of the “pet projects” from the McDaniel era. Tanner Conner, Storm Duck, and Ethan Bonner have all been bumped from the active roster as former undrafted rookies who stuck around for much of McDaniel’s time leading the team. You know change is afoot when developmental projects like these start getting the boot.
