Longtime NFL insider Peter King of NBC Sports gave some insight this week into the Tennessee Titans' looming quarterback decision this offseason.
The Titans can release Ryan Tannehill after the season with just an $18.8 million dead cap hit.
Tennessee has to decide if they want to bring Tannehill back while also deciding if Malik Willis is part of the longterm future at the quarterback position for the Titans.
The play of Josh Dobbs last week against the Dallas Cowboys adds another element to an already difficult offseason decision.
King views the fact that Dobbs started over Willis after just being picked up by the Titans as a sign that Willis might not be part of Tennessee's longterm plans.
"What are the Titans going to do? The Titans have a lot of questions going into the offseason," said King. "They're not in great cap shape. Whoever goes there, if they do end up replacing Ryan Tannehill — my guess is they probably want to — but I also think that's going to be a financial decision."
"If you keep Ryan Tannehill and you're the Tennessee Titans, don't you want to backstop him right now if you're Mike Vrabel with somebody better than Malik Willis? Those are the kind of questions we just don't know now."
"For Mike Vrabel to bypass Malik Willis to play in this game (against Dallas) and perhaps play next week (against Jacksonville) for a guy who's been on this team for 15 minutes, it says something resoundingly beyond today. And they can say whatever they want….but the fact is, if you have a quarterback who has been playing and has been in the system all year and you leapfrog someone (Dobbs) over him who every team in the NFL had a chance to employ on the active roster and didn't, you have to ask yourself the question what is Malik Wilis' role there for the future?"
It's still too early to know where the Titans will go with their quarterback decision, but one thing seems certain — it's hard to see Willis being the starting quarterback in Nashville next season.
It won't be Dobbs, either (there's a reason he was drafted in 2017 and just received his first start this past week).
So it likely comes down to whether or not they keep Tannehill and his $36.6 million cap hit next season or if they choose to release him and pursue a free agent (Tom Brady maybe?) or trade for a quarterback (Derek Carr perhaps?).
While we don't know what's going to happen, we know it's definitely going to be an action-packed offseason for the Titans, a team that also has to hire a new general manager in the coming weeks.
