Tennessee wide receiver Mike Matthews had a big game in the Volunteers’ season-opening win over Furman.
Tennessee junior wide receiver Mike Matthews had a huge game in the Vols’ 56-9 win over Furman on Saturday, catching four passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
Matthews’ day was highlighted by two long touchdown catches.
Matthews also did some things that didn’t show up in the box score, including one of the most physical blocks you’ll see from a wide receiver.
ESPN analyst Cole Cubelic posted a video of Matthews absolutely destroying a Furman wide receiver on a run play.

How can you not love that effort? I mean, Matthews is the furthest player away from the play. We’ve all seen plenty of really good wide receivers give a ho-hum effort on a block like that (and still get the job done). But Matthews prides himself on being a physical wide receiver, and it showed on that play.
“He’s a physical receiver – he wants to get dirty,” said Vols wide receiver Braylon Staley of Matthews last week. “But his game, he likes to change up his speed during routes, so you don’t know what he’s gonna run. He’s a physical receiver, like I said before. He’s a dog. He’s a dog, now.”
