The domino finally fell.
The New Orleans Saints are trading Sean Payton. The Denver Broncos are the team that will make Payton their new head coach.
Denver’s 2023 first-round pick and next year’s second-round pick will be sent to the Saints for Sean Payton and New Orleans' 2024 third-round pick.
Nerves were getting to some fans in New Orleans. They were getting antsy because this process took quite a bit of time.
Regardless, the Saints got it done with Denver, and that's what matters.
With the move, they officially move back into the 2023 first round. They had traded that pick to the Eagles last year. They made that move in order to get Chris Olave and Trevor Penning in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Olave looks like a young star at wide receiver. The jury is still out on Penning.
The Saints needed to get compensation during this off-season for Payton. The team needs momentum, and a first-round pick can help with that. Not to mention, the talent could be solid at the end of the first round.
Additionally, they could use the first from the Broncos, along with other picks, to potentially move up in this year's draft. That's always on the table for the Saints. We all know how much they like to trade up in the draft.
Their potential future starting quarterback could be in a range that New Orleans could move up for in this year's draft.
If not, next year's draft class looks to be really strong at QB.
No matter what – getting a first-round pick as well as a move up in next year's draft should be seen as an absolute victory for the Saints.
