Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has plenty of work to do in the coming months with his new team. He has a major task to take care of as soon as possible, though.
Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero is a highly-sought after candidate for head coaching jobs around the NFL right now. There are some openings remaining, and he could be who a team chooses.
If that happens, Payton and the Broncos cannot block Evero from leaving Denver. It's a promotion, and they have no control over him in that scenario.
That being said, some other organizations also want Evero as their defensive coordinator rather than head coach.
That's a different case. Payton and the Broncos would be able to prevent Evero from taking another DC job around the league.
Evero's unit was one of the best tin the NFL last season. Actually, the Broncos defense probably was the strongest in totality for most of the season. The secondary flourished, and young talent in the front seven began to develop.
Evero did an awesome job and is a top DC in the league at just 42 years old. It makes plenty of sense why other teams are trying to sway him away from the Broncos.
That being said, Payton needs to do his absolute best to keep him in Denver.
It should be his first priority right now.
The other options around the NFL probably could not do a better job with the Broncos defense than Evero could for the foreseeable future. The player love him, and he is highly-respected.
If Payton can keep Evero on his staff, that would be a massive win for the Broncos this off-season.
