Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made reference to a wild debate on Thursday that's taken over the internet during the NFL playoffs.

Mahomes, who played college football at Texas Tech, was asked by a reporter about the significance of having two former Big 12 quarterbacks playing against each other in the Super Bowl.

The superstar quarterback was quick to point out that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is also being claimed by the SEC because he played at Alabama before transferring to Oklahoma.

"First, I know the SEC is going to be made because Alabama tries to claim Jalen as well," said Mahomes while holding back a grin. "So they'll be a little angry about you calling him a Big 12 quarterback."

"It's cool man, I think you saw that three of the quarterbacks in the final four were Big 12 quarterbacks," added Mahomes (San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy played at Iowa State).

Hurts played at Alabama for three seasons before transferring to Oklahoma and becoming a Heisman finalist. He also started in two national championship games at Alabama.

I think it's fair for both schools to claim Hurts — he accomplished a lot at both places.

It would be different if we were talking about Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who spent three seasons at Ohio State before transferring to LSU for his final two seasons of eligibility. Burrow barely saw the field for the Buckeyes before leading LSU to a national championship (Joey B also won the Heisman at LSU).

Most Ohio State fans — at least the casual ones — likely don't even remember Burrow being on the roster. That's not the case with Hurts and Alabama.

With the NCAA transfer portal in place, we're going to start seeing a lot more players in the NFL that played at multiple programs. It's going to be a case-by-case deal. And I think most folks will know which situations make sense (like Alabama claiming hurts) and which ones don't (Ohio State claiming Burrow or Georgia claiming Justin Fields).
