The New Orleans Saints officially have a new assistant.

After Ryan Nielsen left for the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans parted ways with Kris Richard, the Saints have had some openings on the defensive side of their staff. The Saints will need to fill those roles, and that has begun.

They are expected to name former Cleveland Browns DC Joe Woods to be their new defensive coordinator.

The decision isn't too surprising, considering Woods' experience with Dennis Allen. Allen will remain the defensive play-caller.

Woods is expected to be his top assistant and focus mostly on the defensive backs for the Saints. That's the position that he has worked with the most during his NFL career.

Woods has been a position coach/assistant for a handful of NFL teams, including the Buccaneers, Vikings, Raiders, Broncos, 49ers, and Browns.

His defenses has had some inconsistencies, but there have been plenty of bright spots.

Woods was the defensive backs coach for the 2015 Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. His latest tenure was as the Cleveland Browns DC from 2020-2022.

Expect the Saints to round out their staff over the next couple of weeks.
