The Denver Broncos won the offseason by landing a proven head coach in Sean Payton — possibly the most coveted available head coach this offseason.
Various reports, however, indicated that Denver wanted to hire DeMeco Ryans over Payton.
Ryans was hired by the Houston Texans to fill their vacant head coaching job the same day that Denver hired Payton.
ESPN's Adam Schefter disputed Rapoport's report by suggesting that Denver was focused on Payton this week and not Ryans.
We may never know for sure how this week's events played out behind the scenes, but that didn't stop a reporter from asking Ryans about the Broncos job.
And instead of declining to comment, Ryans said it was an easy decision to pass on Denver and accept the Houston job.
Ouch.
We'll see how these hires play out. Ryans is a well-thought-of coach who many believe has a bright future in the NFL. I tend to think he'll do a great job in Houston. But for now, he's still an unknown.
The Broncos got a sure thing in Payton. Someone who is proven. Ryans said it was an easy decision for him to pass on Denver, but maybe that was a two-way street.
