NFL insider says that the Saints make the most sense for one QB prospect
The New Orleans Saints have their quarterback. Derek Carr signed a four-year deal during this off-season. Jameis Winston is the backup QB once again as well.
All of that being said, that doesn't stop analysts and mock drafts from discussing quarterbacks for the Saints in this year's NFL draft.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport believes that Tennessee Vols QB Hendon Hooker is a candidate for the Saints in the first round.
For New Orleans, it would probably be smarter to spend their first-round selection on a player that will help them immediately. They believe that they can contend in the NFC and win their division.
Accordingly, taking a QB that won't play for at least two years most likely wouldn't line up with that.
For Hooker, it would be a great scenario. The Saints have good weapons that are still improving as well as a solid offensive line.
He wouldn't be rushed into a starting job as he recovers from an ACL injury from last season. Hooker would have time to learn from Carr and co. before he ever touched the field.
Some folks, including Rapoport and other insiders, think Hooker will go in round one right now.
Others think he is a day two pick at best at the moment – considering the injury history and his older age as a prospect.
Regardless, it seems like a fair talking point, but the Saints seem too interested in improving the roster to win right now rather than taking a quarterback that could be an NFL starter at some point.
