The Kansas City Chiefs just made yet another addition to their offensive line even after the NFL Draft. They just got done selecting several guys that they think could be the future and cornerstone pieces of their team for years to come.
While all of the attention was on their new rookie draft class, the Chiefs made a move to bring in a new player to their offensive line.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Chiefs are signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Donovan Smith, who has started over 120 games in the last eight years, to a one year deal worth $9 million. In other words, they are paying him to be a starter.
This move is more than surprising. The Chiefs just signed Jawaan Taylor for a lot of money to play left tackle, when he never has before. Then they draft Wanya Morris to play right tackle. Then they sign Smith, a left tackle.
Pelissero also reported that the Chiefs plan to make Smith the full-time starter, which makes things even more confusing. So, would they play Smith at right tackle, when he has been better as a left tackle? Or do they move Taylor to right tackle, his original position, when they just paid him a ton to play left tackle? And what does this mean for Morris?
The Chiefs are doing some odd things this offseason. But, just judging from the things of the past, they know what they are doing. We will now have to wait till workouts to see where these guys lineup, and who plays with what group.
