A lot of people were really excited when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Russell Gage to a big contract last year.
That excitement quickly turned into disappointment, however, as Gage battled injuries all year long. In fact, the last memory Buccaneers fans have of the sixth-year player is the cart that took him off the field during the Wildcard loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
But, 2023 is a new year. Or so it seems. According to Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, Gage was injured "last week".
"Russell had a little bit of an injury last week, but he was doing really well before that," Mayfield told reporters on Tuesday when asked about the receiver room.
This obviously isn't good for Gage, nor is it good for the Buccaneers
The Bucs have three solid receivers in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Gage, but it's pretty barren beyond them. Even if rookie wideout Trey Palmer has all the potential in the world.
Now, obviously, we don't know the extent of Gage's injury. At the same time, his training camp injury never gave off very serious vibes and he was eventually ready for the season opener. Nothing ever got on track, though, as Gage just tried to get by in 2022.
It'll be interesting to see if any questions are asked next week when the media gets its second day to ask about things.
