After a lot of waiting, a little teasing and then a lot of speculating, the Detroit Lions released their brand new alternate helmet on Wednesday.

We've known about the Lions introducing an alternate helmet since February when Rod Wood spoke with the Detroit Free Press and  simultaneously broke Lions fans hearts and peaked their interests when he said "There will not be new uniforms in 2023" and then followed that up with "We will have a new alternative helmet though this year."

On Monday the Lions dropped their first tease with a tweeted picture of an old Ford Mustang that had a license plate that said "ALT HMT" on it. The car also had the date of June 21st on it.

Lions fans took to the internet to try to predict what the helmet would look like. Are they bringing back the 90's look? Is its going to be a blue helmet with a chrome face mask? Is it going to be the Lions alternate logo from the 60's. That one was mine.

It turns out that the helmet was definitely a throwback look and it was the one we predicted that it would be on Monday when the Lions teased it first. The Lions went with the alternate logo form the 1960's. This is a log that's never been featured on a Lions helmet before.

The Lions have also announced that this helmet will make it's debut in their week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night football. They'll also wear them again in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Sadly the helmet will only be worn with the grey alternate jerseys per the team. That just looks kind of weird if you ask me. Take a look.

This thing would have looked so good with the current throw back jerseys they have. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come in next years new uniform set the Lions are expected to get.

How long will this helmet be around? We know the Lions plan to unveil new jerseys after the 2023 season. Is this just a temporary look? or do the Lions plan to have this helmet be a part of the Lions new jersey design? We'll find out soon enough. Until then, this is a pretty cool look.
