The Cincinnati Bengals won't be going in a new direction at the running back position.
The former second-round Joe Mixon agreed to a contract restructure on Friday to give the Bengals some financial relief and to lower his $12.79 million cap hit.
With the speculation of Mixon's possible departure now in the near view, the details of Mixon's reduced salary have been brought to the forefront.
Mixon will take a pay cut of $4.39 million in 2023 and $4.67 million in 2024. His base salary will be $5.51 million this season with an extra $2 million available in incentives each year, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Mixon had a non-guaranteed base salary of $9.4 million before his contract restructure. He has two years left on his four-year extension for $48 million that he signed back in 2020.
Cincinnati can now look more into some other big contract extensions coming up soon with quarterback Joe Burrow, wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, plus linebacker Logan Wilson.
Bengals star bites the bullet to help team this season
Win-win for both sides.
