Cleveland Browns are expected to add running back depth in the form of a former player for the team that was a free agent.
Running back Kareem Hunt visited the team on Tuesday and worked out as well and is now expected to ink a deal with the team. It’ll be a one-year deal for the veteran running back.
The signing has been made official, first reported to be official by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Following the season-ending injury to Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt will be a complimentary back to Jerome Ford.
Cleveland is high on the second-year player Ford and is giving him the keys to be the starting running back for the remainder of the season. Against the Steelers, Ford had the best game of his career to this point with 106 rushing yards on 16 attempts. The Cincinnati product recorded a receiving touchdown on three receptions for 25 yards. Ford scored the touchdown just a couple of plays after Chubb went down with the knee injury near the goal line.
Hunt has remained a free agent since his contract ended with the Browns following the 2022 season. There were offers from both the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints extended to Hunt, A to Z Sports can confirm. Hunt decides to wait it out and ends up back near where he is from.
Last season, Hunt’s yards per carry dropped over a yard from the previous season to 3.8. As the Browns’ backup back once again, Hunt will have a chance to show it was an off-season and that he has not lost a step.
Having spent four seasons with the Browns and appearing in 49 games over that time, Hunt is more than familiar with the Browns and what they want to do in the offense. Those four seasons include three with the current regimen.
Cleveland will have their backup running back to Ford and Pierre Strong Jr. appears to be the No. 3 going forward.
Losing Nick Chubb is a huge jab to Browns, not having a quarterback is the hook
Cleveland has a major problem on their hands.
