The Kansas City Chiefs had to game plan for an unexpected player leading up to their divisional-round playoff win against the Buffalo Bills.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes mentioned in the postgame press conference that the team had to change a few of their presnap signals due to the Bills having a familiar face on their practice squad: QB Shane Buechele.
Buechele spent two seasons in Kansas City as the team's No. 3 QB behind Mahomes and Chad Henne from 2021-2022. He might have spent a full third season in Kansas City if Buffalo didn't sign him to their practice squad following the 2023 preseason.
At one point it seemed like Buechele was going to be groomed as the Chiefs' backup QB given how much the team played him in the preseason. Since he was so involved in the Chiefs' QB room during a Super Bowl run, it's no surprise that he'd be familiar with the offense's presnap signals. Hence the change by the Chiefs' offense in case there was a bit of knowledge trading between Buechele and the Bills.
Despite the necessary changes, the Chiefs were able to succeed on offense and get past the Bills in the divisional round, winning a 27-24 nail-biter. K.C. will travel to Baltimore next Sunday to take on the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.
