The New England Patriots need a star receiver on the roster and it appears they have a few in their sights. There are two receivers on the San Francisco 49ers who are viewed as potential trade candidates, and the Patriots reportedly inquired about them.
Specifically, prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, New England had preliminary discussions with the 49ers, CBS' Josina Anderson reports.
49ers reporter Michael Silver said that Samuel was more likely to get traded than Brandon Aiyuk, who the Patriots reportedly called about, according to NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran. And The Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi added that the Patriots and the Buffalo Bills have expressed interest in Samuel.
Plus, San Francisco's first round pick made all of this seem more likely. Trade conversations hyped up after the 49ers selected Florida receiver Ricky Pearsall with the 32nd pick in the first round of the draft.
And the Patriots are in a prime position on the second day of the draft, currently holding the 34th overall pick.
This has been a busy and important draft for the Patriots, and it seems this isn't the only big trade the Patriots tried to pull off before it all began.
It was reported on Thursday night that the Patriots were one of two teams to reach out to the Los Angeles Chargers in recent weeks to see if the team had any interest in trading star quarterback Justin Herbert. But they were told "a flat no."
So with only a few hours to go until the second round begins, let's see if the Patriots can get a deal done and gain a top receiver.
