Lonnie Phelps, a second-year defensive end, was arrested after being accused of wrecking into a high-end restaurant in Key West, Florida. The name of the restaurant is Red Shoe Island Bistro and no one was hurt.
Cleveland has released Phelps, according to a release by the team.
The Browns defensive end is accused of wrecking his 2024 Hyundai SUV into the restaurant shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday. A police report says that Phelps and a female passenger appeared under the influence of alcohol or drugs after the crash. According to the report, Phelps refused to take a breath test to show the amount of schlock that he had consumed.
After signing with the Browns as an undrafted free agent last year, Phelps spent the season on the practice squad and he did not appear in a game.
Cleveland had Phelps inked to a one-year deal worth $795,000 for the 2024 season. Phelps was a long shot to make the team in 2024 with the depth that Cleveland has in front of him. Myles Garrett, Za’Darius Smith, Ogbo Okoronkwo, and Isaiah McGuire fill that room out nicely. Phelps would have been battling with Sam Kamara and Isaiah Thomas for the No. 5 edge spot if Cleveland keeps that many.
At this time, the Browns have not released a statement on the matter. If that changes, A to Z Sports will have everything new developing around the story.
